Hellbrunn IMG_0178 (2)MozartStatueThe old town of Salzburg, (which is deservedly awarded UNESCO Heritage site status) remains flawlessly unspoilt. The attractive cobbled streets and absorbing high-quality shops are surrounded by the spires and domes of Baroque churches and the peaks of the neighbouring mountains, often topped with snow. There is no escaping that Salzburg was the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and visitors flock to his house and buy quantities of the delicious Mozart Kugeln sold in almost every shop.

As well as the numerous sights of the city, visits to the the nearby Salt Mines at Hallein and the trick water fountains at the Helbrunn Palace are fun and affordable . A trip out to the “Salzkammergut”, an extensive area of lakes and green pastures to the East of the city is also a must. For longer stays, there are ice caves, castles and alpine railways and cable cars to be enjoyed.

Venues in this area are extremely varied: There are many options for open air concerts in attractive lakeside settings, where the atmosphere is relaxed and audiences are good. Choirs with a classical programme can perform as part of the lunchtime concert series in Salzburg Cathedral. Many other churches in the area have no restrictions on programme and welcome all types of choirs and instrumental groups.

Austria's musical and cultural heritage is incredibly exciting, making it an excellent choice of destination for musicians. The grandiose capital of Vienna and the exquisite domed city of Salzburg lie only three hours apart by coach and offer a huge contrast for visitors.
