Austria – Vienna

  • Categories: austria

Vienna has always been an epicentre of culture and creativity, inspiring musicians, artists and architects throughout the centuries. Streets unchanged since the Austro-Hungarian Empire, stand shoulder to shoulder with eye-catching buildings designed by Hundertwasser. The Kunsthistoriches Museum and Belvedere house old masters alongside Klimt and Schiele. Strauss, Schoenberg, Mozart and Haydn all composed great works in Vienna (and nearby Eisenstadt) and their music lives on in the Opera House, with the Vienna Philharmonic and at the famous New Year’s Day balls.

After visiting the Spanische Hofreitschule, St Stephen’s Cathedral and the Schönbrunn Palace, a carefree afternoon or evening can be spend at the Prater, or enjoying Sachertorte at one of the glamorous coffee houses. Visitors often escape the city by visiting the traditional wine producing taverns in Grinzig, or taking in the scenery of the beautiful river region “The Wachau” where you will find imposing Melk Abbey and numerous idyllic, cobbled towns such as Spitz and Krems.

Accommodation is available in a range of hotels; and for groups with a slightly lower budget, there are several excellent “up market” youth hostels and university residences available during summer holiday periods. For groups who decide to travel by air, OneStage can either hire local coaching, or sometimes groups choose to use the public transport system, which is efficient and inexpensive.

Choirs often take part in the lunchtime concert series held at St Stephen’s Cathedral or perform a formal evening concert at the impressive Karlskirche. There are numerous other city centre churches welcoming performances by choral and instrumental groups as well as churches and concert halls in smaller towns in the region.

Austria's musical and cultural heritage is incredibly exciting, making it an excellent choice of destination for musicians. The grandiose capital of Vienna and the exquisite domed city of Salzburg lie only three hours apart by coach and offer a huge contrast for visitors.
